Duluth is served by two electric utilities: Georgia Power and Jackson EMC, an electric membership cooperative. Which one you have depends on where you live; the company name is on your power bill. Report an outage to that company, not to the city. The city of Duluth does not run the power grid.

Who to call

Georgia Power

Georgia Power says you can report an outage 24 hours a day in four ways, according to its outage page:

  • Call 888-891-0938.
  • Text OUT to 42797.
  • Use the Georgia Power mobile app.
  • Report it on the outage map, which also shows current outages.

Georgia Power says it generally does not reimburse customers for spoiled food or damage from outages caused by storms and other events beyond its control. Residential customers whose service entrance is damaged in a major storm may qualify for up to $450 toward the repair, according to the company.

Jackson EMC

Jackson EMC members report an outage by calling 1-800-245-4044 and choosing option 1 for the automated outage system, through the MyJacksonEMC account on the cooperative’s website (“Report an Issue/Inquiry,” then “Power Outage”) or in the MyJacksonEMC app, according to its Report an Outage page. Live outages are on the outage map, also reached through the cooperative’s Storm Center. For account questions, the city lists Jackson EMC at 770-963-6166.

Downed lines

Georgia Power’s advice: always assume a downed line is energized. Stay at least 35 feet away, keep children and pets back, and do not touch the line or anything touching it, including trees, fences and standing water. Call 911 or 1-888-891-0938 to have it barricaded until it can be repaired.

Streetlights

The city’s planning FAQ sends streetlight outage reports to the utility that owns the light: Georgia Power through its online streetlight report, or Jackson EMC at 1-800-462-3691.

Gas, water and storms

  • Gas leak: call Atlanta Gas Light’s 24-hour emergency line, 877-427-4321. Call 811 before you dig.
  • No water or a main break: Gwinnett County Department of Water Resources emergency line, 678-376-7000. Water and sewer in Duluth are county services.
  • Storms: the city asks residents to sign up for text alerts by texting DULUTH to 888777, to stay off the streets where possible so trucks can get through, and to report hazards to the police non-emergency line, 770-476-4151, according to its severe weather page.
