Safety tips

Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services, Safe Kids Gwinnett and the Gwinnett County Police Department published these tips in their Halloween safety release:

For trick-or-treaters and parents

  • Trick-or-treat in familiar neighborhoods, in groups, and carry a flashlight.
  • Walk, do not run, and use the sidewalk where there is one.
  • Never go into a house, and never accept a ride from a stranger.
  • Wear bright costumes or add reflective tape; make sure costumes fit and are flame resistant.
  • Use soft, flexible props that cannot be mistaken for real weapons.
  • Check candy wrappers for tampering, throw away anything open or unwrapped, and do not give hard candy to small children.

For drivers

  • Drive slowly, especially in residential areas, and watch for children in the street and in medians.
  • Never drive after drinking or using drugs.

For homeowners

  • Use flameless candles in jack-o’-lanterns, and keep paper and dry decorations away from heat and flames.
  • Do not overload outlets with lights and sound equipment.
  • Clear tripping hazards and light the path to your door.

Report suspicious activity to the Duluth Police Department, 770-476-4151, or call 911.
