Fireworks at home: Georgia rules

According to the state Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner, all consumer fireworks have been legal in Georgia since July 1, 2015, including firecrackers, skyrockets and sparklers. For local rules on when and where you can use them, the commissioner’s office tells residents to contact their local police or fire department; in Duluth, that is the police non-emergency line, 770-476-4151.

The commissioner’s safety tips:

  • Read and follow the label directions.
  • Use fireworks only outdoors, and light one at a time.
  • Never make your own fireworks or relight one that malfunctioned.
  • Fireworks should be used only with close adult supervision; never give them to small children.
  • Keep water handy.
  • Never throw fireworks at another person.
  • Call 911 in an emergency.

The commissioner’s office says most fireworks injuries happen in the four weeks around Independence Day.

Holiday schedules around July Fourth

  • City offices closed Friday, July 3, 2026, for Independence Day, on the city’s holiday schedule, and the Public Works dumpsters were closed that day.
  • Trash pickup runs one day late in Independence Day week, according to the city’s solid waste page.
